Day tripDay Trip from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou
Cross the High Atlas to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and back – a long day of about 3.5–4 h driving each way.

Climbing a hillside above the Ounila River, Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most striking sights in southern Morocco. Most Sahara tours from Marrakech stop here.
Ait Ben Haddou is a ksar — a fortified village of earthen buildings — on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Few families still live inside the old ksar; most moved to the newer village across the river. Its architecture and setting have appeared in numerous films and series.
Spring and autumn. Arrive early or late in the day for softer light and fewer visitors.
Day trip or overnight? Ait Ben Haddou is a long but feasible day trip from Marrakech. Continuing to the Sahara needs overnight stops: Merzouga is at least two days from Marrakech.
