2 days2-Day Merzouga Desert Experience
For travellers arriving by bus or self-drive: a sunset camel trek, a night under Saharan skies and sunrise over Erg Chebbi.

Beyond the dunes, the Merzouga area has a rich cultural life. This day loop takes you to Khamlia for Gnawa music, to the historic Tafilalt town of Rissani with its ksar and traditional souk, and through the palm groves, with a stop at a fossil workshop. It is the ideal complement to a night in the desert.
Merzouga → Khamlia → Erg Chebbi edge → Rissani → (Erfoud fossils) → Merzouga
Best for: Guests staying two or more nights in Merzouga, culture lovers and photographers.
Driving times are approximate and exclude long stops; they vary with weather, roads and traffic.
We pick you up in Merzouga around 9 am and drive about 15 minutes to Khamlia, where families descended from people of sub-Saharan origin keep Gnawa music alive; a short performance and tea are typical, with a contribution to the musicians. Continuing by 4x4 along the edge of Erg Chebbi, we may stop at a nomad area where a family agrees to receive visitors. Then on to Rissani, about 45 minutes from Merzouga. On market days the souk fills with spices, dates, livestock and the famous donkey park; we confirm the market days for your dates. Visit an old ksar, walk in the Tafilalt palm grove, and stop at a fossil workshop before returning to Merzouga mid-afternoon.

No accommodation is included. This loop is designed for guests already staying in Merzouga, and can be combined with a camp night or hotel stay.
Travel is by 4x4 or air-conditioned vehicle with driver. Lunch is at your own expense in Rissani.
Shared departures run on selected dates and need a minimum number of guests — availability is confirmed before booking.
Midday heat is intense from May to September – bring sun protection and water. Off-road 4x4 sections can be bumpy and are not advised with back problems or during pregnancy. Souks are crowded; keep valuables secure. Ask before photographing people, especially in the market. Most stops are accessible by vehicle, but souk lanes and ksar alleys are uneven.
