Family-Friendly Desert Camp

Spending a night in the Sahara can be the highlight of a family trip. We choose camps and timings that suit children: shorter transfers, earlier meals and room to play.

The experience

About this activity

For families we usually recommend a camp that is a short ride from the dune edge, so the journey in does not tire young children. A 4x4 transfer is a good alternative for very small children or if anyone is unsure about camels. Sandy floors, open space and no traffic make camps a natural playground, but we still choose them with care.

We look for camps with family-sized tents or adjacent tents, and ideally private bathrooms — which is easier at higher-category camps. Dinner can be served earlier on request, and simple dishes such as plain couscous, omelettes or bread are usually available for fussy eaters. Children love sliding down the dunes, spotting beetle tracks and seeing the stars appear. In the morning, a short sunrise walk is often enough before breakfast. We will discuss your children’s ages and needs and confirm facilities before booking.

  • Short transfer options for young children
  • Family or adjacent tents
  • Earlier dinner on request
  • Sand play, stars and sunrise
  • Sandboarding can be added

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Desert nights can be cold from November to February, close to freezing at times, and summer days very hot. Camps are reached by camel or 4x4 over soft sand; tell us in advance about mobility needs so we can suggest the most accessible option. Camel rides carry health caveats (back problems, pregnancy, weight guideline set by the operator). Use a torch at night, keep tent zips closed against insects, and drink plenty of water. Children should always be supervised, especially on steep dune faces and near any fire.

Good to know

  • Bring a torch for each child — it becomes part of the fun.
  • Pack favourite snacks and a spare set of clothes.
  • Sunscreen and hats are essential.
  • Tell us children’s ages when enquiring.

Questions

FAQs

Is a desert camp suitable for babies?

It can be, with planning. A short 4x4 transfer and a camp with private facilities make it easier. Ask us about cots and practical details.

Can children ride camels?

Usually yes, often with a parent. The minimum age is set by the operator — please confirm.
