The experience

About this activity

Luxury camps in Erg Chebbi are typically set in a sheltered hollow among the dunes, a short ride from the edge of the erg. Tents are large, furnished with real beds, rugs and lanterns, and usually have an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and shower. Most luxury camps are reached from Merzouga or Hassi Labied in well under an hour by 4x4, or a little longer by camel, and sit out of sight of the villages.

The evening follows a gentle rhythm: arrive for sunset, enjoy mint tea, then a multi-course Moroccan dinner, often served in a dining tent or outdoors when the weather allows. Many camps offer drumming or music by the fire afterwards (where fires are permitted) and a quiet place to look at the stars. Electricity is commonly solar with sockets in the tent, though power can be limited compared with a hotel. We confirm each camp’s facilities — including hot water, heating or fans, and dietary options — before you book, so there are no surprises.

  • Private tent with en-suite bathroom (typical)
  • Real beds and quality bedding
  • Multi-course Moroccan dinner and breakfast
  • Sunset and sunrise from the dunes
  • Arrival by camel or 4x4

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Desert nights can be cold from November to February, close to freezing at times, and summer days very hot. Camps are reached by camel or 4x4 over soft sand; tell us in advance about mobility needs so we can suggest the most accessible option. Camel rides carry health caveats (back problems, pregnancy, weight guideline set by the operator). Use a torch at night, keep tent zips closed against insects, and drink plenty of water.

Good to know

  • Even in luxury camps, sand is part of the experience.
  • Bring a power bank in case charging is shared or limited.
  • Book early for spring, autumn and festive periods.
  • Ask about private dinner or celebration add-ons.

Questions

FAQs

Do luxury camps have private bathrooms?

Most do — en-suite with toilet and shower is typical. We confirm this for your specific camp before booking.

Is there Wi‑Fi?

Some camps offer limited Wi‑Fi or have phone signal; many do not. Treat it as a chance to disconnect.

Is the camp accessible for limited mobility?

Access is over soft sand. A 4x4 can bring you close to the tent, but paths are uneven. Please tell us your needs and we will check options.
