From Flour to Fire

Bread is at the heart of every Moroccan meal. This proposed experience follows it from the beginning — grain, flour, kneading and fire — in the company of a local family near Merzouga. This is a proposed signature concept — every element is subject to confirmation by our team when you enquire, depending on season, weather and local availability.

  • approx. 2.5–3.5 h
  • Half day
  • Merzouga area (local family home or village)

Proposed experience. This is an original concept we are developing. It is not yet a fixed product — ask us whether it can be arranged for your dates and group, and we will confirm exactly what is possible.

Who it’s for: Families, food lovers and travellers who enjoy hands-on cultural experiences and want a quiet, personal encounter with local life.

The experience

About this experience

Where the family still keeps the tools, the session may start with grain and a traditional hand mill, showing how flour was once ground at home. Then comes the dough: flour, water, salt and a little starter or yeast, kneaded by hand with plenty of laughter at first attempts.

Depending on the household and the day, the bread is baked in a clay oven (tafernoute) or in the hot sand beneath the embers of a fire — the old desert method. Both reward patience, and the smell alone is worth it.

While the bread bakes, there is time for mint tea and conversation, with your guide translating. You then share the warm bread, perhaps with olive oil, butter, honey or a simple dish prepared by the family.

This is a visit to a real home. It only happens with the family’s consent, they are fairly paid for their time, and the exact format depends on them. Please respect their privacy and ask before taking photos.

  • From grain and flour to finished bread
