Moroccan Mint Tea Ceremony

In Morocco, tea is more than a drink: it’s how guests are welcomed. In this relaxed session a local host shows you each step of the mint tea ritual and invites you to try the famous high pour yourself.

The experience

About this activity

The ceremony uses Chinese gunpowder green tea, fresh mint (sometimes with other herbs such as wormwood in winter) and sugar, brewed in a metal teapot on a small tray. Your host explains why the tea leaves are first rinsed, how the sweetness is adjusted, and why the tea is poured from height — to aerate it and create a light foam on top of the glass.

You’ll learn the customs around serving: who pours, why several glasses are often offered, and how tea marks everything from business deals to family visits. Then it’s your turn to try pouring without splashing. It’s a gentle, sociable experience that fits easily into a camp stay, a village visit or an afternoon at your guesthouse.

When the ceremony takes place in a family home or nomad tent, it’s arranged with the hosts’ consent and they are paid fairly. Please ask before photographing people.
