Short (≤ 2 h)Gnawa Music Experience in Khamlia
Live Gnawa rhythms, mint tea and a respectful introduction to the musical heritage of Khamlia, 15 minutes from the dunes.

The deep pulse of the guembri, the clatter of iron qraqeb and voices answering each other — Gnawa music is part of the story of Khamlia. This proposed experience pairs a musical visit to the village with an evening of rhythm at camp. This is a proposed signature concept — every element is subject to confirmation by our team when you enquire, depending on season, weather and local availability.
Proposed experience. This is an original concept we are developing. It is not yet a fixed product — ask us whether it can be arranged for your dates and group, and we will confirm exactly what is possible.
Who it’s for: Music lovers, culturally curious travellers, families and groups who want to understand the sounds of the Sahara, not just hear them.
Khamlia, around 15 minutes from Merzouga, is home to a community with Gnawa roots, whose ancestors came from regions south of the Sahara. Music here carries history, spirituality and memory. A visit would be arranged with local musicians, who typically share several pieces and explain the instruments over tea.
Where the musicians are happy to, you may be invited to try the qraqeb (metal castanets) or a drum. The atmosphere is warm and informal, but it is a cultural encounter, not a show — a contribution to the musicians is part of the arrangement.
Later, you continue into the dunes for sunset and a night at a desert camp. After dinner, the camp team often brings out drums around the fire. It is relaxed and participatory, and there is space to simply listen beneath the stars.
Timings and the exact format depend on the musicians’ availability and are confirmed with your proposal.
Timings shift with the season (sunrise and sunset change by more than two hours across the year).
Facilities differ between camps and seasons; we confirm them for your exact dates.
We confirm these details in your written quote:
The village visit involves little walking. Desert nights can be cold in winter. Camel rides are not advised for people with back problems or during pregnancy. Please ask before filming or photographing musicians and villagers.
Contact us for a price. Every trip is priced for your dates, group size, tour type and accommodation level. Send us your plan on WhatsApp or by email and we will send you the price. It is a proposed concept rather than a fixed departure. Tell us your dates and group, and our team will confirm what can be arranged, adapt the plan if needed and send you a written proposal with the price on request.
It is a visit to musicians in their own community rather than a stage performance. The format varies with the musicians and the day.
