Short (≤ 2 h)Sunrise Camel Trek in Erg Chebbi
An early-morning camel ride into the dunes to watch first light spill across Erg Chebbi.

The late-afternoon heat eases, the sand turns deep orange and your caravan heads into the dunes. A sunset trek is the most popular way to experience Erg Chebbi — and for good reason.
From the dune edge near Merzouga or Hassi Labied, your guide leads a small string of camels into the sand about one and a half hours before sunset. The route climbs gently between the dunes rather than straight over them, so the ride is comfortable even for first-timers. Camels walk at an easy, swaying pace, and the guide keeps the string close together so nobody is left behind. Before you start, your guide shows you how to hold on as the camel rises and kneels.
Near the top of a ridge the camels kneel and you walk the final stretch. From here the view runs across a sea of crests towards the higher dunes, which reach around 150 m. As the sun drops, the colours deepen and every ripple casts a shadow. Sunset time varies a great deal between June and December, so we confirm the departure time for your date. You ride back in the soft afterglow and are usually off the camels as dusk settles. If you would rather not return, the same ride can end at a desert camp for the night — see our overnight options.
Timings shift with the season (sunrise and sunset change by more than two hours across the year).
We confirm these details in your written quote:
Camel riding is gentle but not for everyone. The camel kneels for you to mount and dismount, and the two lurches as it stands and sits can jar the back, so tell us beforehand about back or neck problems, recent surgery or hip issues. We do not recommend riding during pregnancy. A weight guideline applies for the animals’ welfare — the exact limit is set by the operator and must be confirmed before booking. On steep descents your guide may ask you to dismount and walk, which is safer for you and easier on the camel. Our camels are rested between rides, watered, and never overloaded; a guide leads the caravan on foot at all times. In summer, carry water and a hat even late in the day.

Usually around 1–1.5 hours of riding in total, plus time at the viewpoint. The whole outing is approx. 1.5–2 hours.
Sunset is the busiest time in Erg Chebbi. Our guides choose routes and ridges that are quieter where possible, but you will likely see other caravans.
