Sunrise Camel Trek in Erg Chebbi

Set off in the cool half-dark and reach a quiet ridge just as the sky begins to colour. A sunrise trek is the calmest way to meet the Sahara: soft light, cool sand and almost no one else around.

The experience

About this activity

Erg Chebbi rises suddenly from the stony hamada east of Merzouga, with dunes reaching roughly 150 m at their highest. At dawn the sand turns from grey-blue to apricot to gold in a matter of minutes, and the ripples made by the night wind are still unmarked. We meet you at the edge of the dunes — usually near Merzouga or Hassi Labied — while it is still dark, and your guide leads the camels out on foot.

The ride itself is unhurried. After 30–45 minutes the caravan stops below a ridge, the camels kneel, and you climb the last stretch on foot to sit and watch the sun clear the horizon. Sunrise time shifts considerably through the year — earlier in summer, later in winter — so we confirm your exact meeting time the evening before. Once the light has risen you ride back while the dunes still throw long shadows, which is a favourite moment for photographers. You are typically back in time for breakfast at your hotel or camp, with the whole day ahead and the heat not yet built up.

  • Watch dawn light change the colour of the dunes minute by minute
  • Cool, quiet riding before the day warms up
  • Short climb on foot to a viewpoint ridge
  • Long morning shadows ideal for photos
  • Back in time for breakfast

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Camel riding is gentle but not for everyone. The camel kneels for you to mount and dismount, and the two lurches as it stands and sits can jar the back, so tell us beforehand about back or neck problems, recent surgery or hip issues. We do not recommend riding during pregnancy. A weight guideline applies for the animals’ welfare — the exact limit is set by the operator and must be confirmed before booking. On steep descents your guide may ask you to dismount and walk, which is safer for you and easier on the camel. Our camels are rested between rides, watered, and never overloaded; a guide leads the caravan on foot at all times. Mornings in winter can be cold, so bring a warm layer.

Good to know

  • Winter dawns in the desert are chilly — bring a fleece or jacket you can remove later.
  • Wear closed shoes or sandals with a strap; sand is cold early on.
  • Keep phones and cameras in a zip pocket while mounting and dismounting.
  • A scarf helps if there is any wind.

Questions

FAQs

What time does a sunrise camel trek start?

It depends on the season. We work back from that day’s sunrise time and usually start 45–60 minutes before it; we confirm the time the evening before.

Can I do this from a desert camp?

Yes. If you are staying overnight in the dunes, the sunrise ride can leave directly from camp — ask us to add it.

Is it suitable for children?

Many children enjoy it, usually sharing the ride or on a led camel. The minimum age is set by the operator — please confirm when booking.
