Day tripDay Trip from Marrakech to Essaouira
A day on the Atlantic: Essaouira’s ramparts, fishing port and relaxed medina, about 3 hours each way from Marrakech.

Essaouira is where Marrakech travellers come to breathe. Sea breezes, whitewashed walls with blue shutters and a busy fishing port make it a favourite stop on the coast.
Formerly known as Mogador, Essaouira was laid out in the 18th century by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, with European engineering influences. Its medina was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
The town is known for its woodcarvers working thuya wood, its music — notably the Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually held in summer — and steady trade winds that draw kitesurfers and windsurfers.
Year-round. Summer stays cooler than inland Morocco, though it is windy. Spring and autumn are lovely for walking.
Day trip or overnight? Essaouira works as a day trip from Marrakech. The Sahara is far away — reaching Merzouga from Essaouira requires a multi-day tour via Marrakech.
