Day tripDay Trip from Marrakech to Essaouira
A day on the Atlantic: Essaouira’s ramparts, fishing port and relaxed medina, about 3 hours each way from Marrakech.

A gentle contrast to the desert and the medinas, this tour heads west to the Atlantic. Essaouira’s fortified medina, fishing port and long beach invite slow days, and the coast road south via the surf village of Imsouane reveals argan-covered hills and wild bays on the way to Agadir. Finish in Agadir for a beach stay or return to Marrakech.
Marrakech → Essaouira (2 nights) → Imsouane → Taghazout → Agadir → Marrakech (or end in Agadir)
Best for: Couples, families and anyone wanting a relaxed coastal break after the cities or the desert.
Driving times are approximate and exclude long stops; they vary with weather, roads and traffic.
We leave Marrakech mid-morning and cross the Haouz plain westwards, where the land gradually becomes dotted with argan trees – sometimes with goats climbing in their branches (be aware that some roadside goat stops are staged for tips). We stop at a women’s argan cooperative to see how the oil is extracted by hand, before reaching Essaouira around lunchtime. After checking in, wander the white-and-blue medina, walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts with their old bronze cannons, and watch the sun set over the ocean from the walls or the beach. Essaouira is often windy, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
A free day to enjoy Essaouira at your own pace. Mornings at the fishing port are lively as boats land their catch and gulls wheel overhead; you can choose fish at the stalls and have it grilled for lunch. Browse the thuya-wood workshops beneath the ramparts, visit the gallery scene and the Mellah, or simply relax on a café terrace on Place Moulay Hassan. Optional activities can be arranged on request: a cooking class, a horse or camel ride on the beach towards Diabat, or a kitesurf or surf lesson with a qualified school – the wind makes this a popular spot. Evening music is common in the medina, especially Gnawa.
Today follows the coast south through argan-covered hills with glimpses of the ocean. A short detour brings us to Imsouane, a small fishing village with a long, gentle right-hand wave popular with surfers; it is a fine place for a seafood lunch overlooking the bay. Continuing south, we pass the surf towns of Tamraght and Taghazout, where you can stop for a walk on the beach, before arriving in Agadir in the afternoon. Agadir was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake and today has a long, modern promenade. Late in the day, drive up to the Agadir Oufella kasbah ruins for views over the bay.
Enjoy a final morning by the sea – perhaps a walk along the beach promenade or a visit to the Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in the region (closed on Mondays; confirm on your date). After lunch, we drive about three hours on the motorway back to Marrakech, crossing the western High Atlas foothills, and drop you at your riad or hotel in the evening. Alternatively, the tour can end in Agadir, with a drop-off at your hotel or Agadir airport, if you would like to extend your stay by the coast or fly home from there. A Paradise Valley excursion can also be added before the return.
We confirm these details in your written quote:
Two nights in Essaouira (riads in the medina or hotels near the beach) and one night in Agadir (beach hotels). Budget, standard and luxury options are available, confirmed at booking.
Daily breakfast is the typical plan; the coast is ideal for fresh seafood lunches at your own expense. Travel is by private air-conditioned vehicle with driver.
The Atlantic has strong currents and waves; swim only on supervised beaches and follow local flags. Water sports should be booked only with qualified schools and suitable equipment. Essaouira’s medina is flat and relatively easy to walk, though some riads have steep stairs. Beach hotels in Agadir are generally the most accessible option for travellers with limited mobility.

The beach is long but the wind and cool water make it better for walking and water sports. Agadir’s bay is more sheltered for swimming.
