First Light in the Sahara
Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga

First Light in the Sahara

In the half-light before dawn, the dunes are cool, silent and blue-grey — then the first rays turn them copper and gold. This proposed sunrise experience gets you to a good vantage point in time to see it all. This is a proposed signature concept — every element is subject to confirmation by our team when you enquire, depending on season, weather and local availability.

  • Short (≤ 2 h)
  • Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga

Proposed experience. This is an original concept we are developing. It is not yet a fixed product — ask us whether it can be arranged for your dates and group, and we will confirm exactly what is possible.

Who it’s for: Early risers, photographers, couples and families staying in Merzouga or at a desert camp who want a calm, memorable start to the day.

The experience

About this experience

We would meet you at your camp or hotel in the dark and set out on foot or by camel towards a dune crest chosen for its eastern view. The climb is taken slowly; there is no race to the top.

Once settled, you watch the colours shift across the sand sea as the sun breaks the horizon, often with a long view towards the Algerian border region. Our guide would brew mint tea while the light changes — a simple ritual that makes the moment feel unhurried.

Afterwards you return for breakfast. The whole outing is short, so it fits easily before a long driving day or alongside other activities in Merzouga.

  • Sunrise from a dune crest in Erg Chebbi
  • Quiet, cool start to the day
  • Mint tea served as the light changes
  • Option to go on foot or by camel (to be confirmed)
  • Easy to combine with a departure day

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Climbing soft dunes in the dark is tiring; take it slowly and use a torch. Mornings can be cold, especially in winter. Camel rides are not advised for people with back problems or during pregnancy. Sunrise visibility depends on the weather, and dust or cloud can soften the colours.

Good to know

  • Sunrise time changes a lot through the year — we confirm the meeting time the day before
  • Bring a warm layer and a head torch
  • Shoes you can empty of sand easily are ideal
  • Combine with a sunset camel trek for both ends of the day

Questions

FAQs

Is First Light in the Sahara available on any date?

It is a proposed concept rather than a fixed departure. Tell us your dates and group, and our team will confirm what can be arranged, adapt the plan if needed and send you a written proposal with the price on request.

Do I need to be fit?

A moderate level of mobility is helpful because walking on sand is effortful. We can choose a lower, closer viewpoint or suggest a camel for part of the way.
